Spatial Sound — History, Principle, Progress and Challenge

Abstract

The aim of spatial sound or spatial audio is to reproduce the spatial information of sound, so as to recreate the desired spatial auditory events or perceptions. Recently, spatial sound becomes a hot topic in the fields of acoustics, signal processing, and communication. A series of spatial sound techniques have been developed and applied to a wide area of scientific research, engineering, and amusement. The history, principle, progress and applications of spatial sound technique are comprehensively reviewed in this article. Especially, spatial sound techniques based on different principles are united within the framework of spatial sampling and reconstruction theorem of sound field. The challenges and prospects of spatial sound are also addressed.

摘要

空间声的目的是重放声音的空间信息， 以产生期望的空间听觉感知。近年，空间声成为声学、信号处理、通信等领域的热门课题。已发展了一系列的空间声技术，并应用到科学研究、工程、娱乐等广泛的领域。本文综合评述空间声技术的原理、进展和应用。特别是在声场空间采样和重构的框架下，将基于不同原理的空间声技术统一起来。文中也讨论了空间声的发展前景与挑战。

作者简介

谢菠荪教授，1982和1987年在华南理工大学分别获得物理专业学士和理学硕士学位。1998年在同济大学声学专业获得理学博士学位。现任华南理工大学物理与光电学院教授，声学研究所所长。他是中国声学学会副理事长，中国电子学会会士。他的研究领域包括双耳听觉， 空间声， 声信号处理， 室内声学（电子邮箱：phbsxie@scut.edu.cn）

XIE Bosun received a Bachelor degree in physics and a Master of Science degree in acoustics from South China University of Technology in 1982 and 1987, respectively. In 1998, he received a Doctor of Science degree in acoustics from Tongji University. He is now the director and a professor at the Acoustic Laboratory in the School of Physics and Optoeletronics, South China University of Technology. He is also the vice president of the Acoustical Society of China and fellow of Chinese Institute of Electronics. His research interests include binaural hearing, spatial sound, acoustic signal processing, and room acoustics. (Email: phbsxie@scut.edu.cn)
